“I still can’t believe it. Even though I can see it here in front of me, I still can’t believe it.” Those were the words of Lucas Mashilo who walked away with a brand-new Toyota Quantum as the grand prize of the Total Quartz Summer Promotion.

At the end 2019, Total Lubricants ran an exciting summer promotion from 1 October to 31 December 2019 at Total Service Stations countrywide. To enter the competition, consumers had to buy any 500ml Total Quartz and send the barcode together with their name and contact details to a unique code. The prizes on offer were R100 000 worth of instant airtime that consumers could win their share of, 1 of 5 fuel cards to the value of R20 000, or the grand prize of a brand-new Toyota Quantum. Over 60 000 entries were received, but there could only be one winner of the grand prize. Lucas Mashilo was the lucky winner of the grand prize!

Hailing from the small town of Ogies, 35 km outside of Witbank in Mpumalanga, Lucas says he saw the promotion posters at a service station and decided to buy a 500ml Total Quartz to enter the competition. “I normally enter competitions, so I decided to try my luck with this one. I kept returning to buy and enter – I entered more than 20 times, I even lost count!” Lucas bought from various service stations, including Petroport N12 and the service stations in Witbank, but the winning till slip which he kept with him came from a purchase he made at Total Sizan in Boksburg, after a day visit to Boksburg Mall.

Mashilo says he could not believe his luck when he received the call from Total. “When the phone rang and I saw a private number, I almost ignored it thinking it was an insurance salesperson, but something told me to answer it. When I was told that I had won, I initially thought that maybe I had won the R20 000 petrol voucher. Even after confirmation that I had won the Quantum, I still could not believe it – I even told my wife that I thought it was a joke. It was only after I received the email from Total with confirmation that it dawned on me.”

Due to the current national lockdown, Lucas has not had an opportunity to properly test-drive his new vehicle. “Maybe after the lockdown when I have driven around in it, I will fully believe that it is mine. For now, I go out and sit inside it just to remind myself that this is real.”

Looking into the future, Mashilo intends on starting his own business. “I have been trying to start a small transport business, but my finances were not coming together as planned. With this prize I can finally realise my dream. I intend on using the vehicle as staff transport in the mornings and evenings for people who work in the nearby mines, and I am communicating with the taxi associations to get a permit for a route during the day.”

“I would like to thank Total for this gift that they have given me. I am still speechless, and I am so grateful. I am planning on coming to Total after the national lockdown to say thank you properly to everyone. There are not enough words to express my gratitude. I will keep supporting Total. Thank you and thank you.”
